Discrete mathematics institutes for K-8 teachers.

Lead a DIMACS institute for K-8 teachers at your site!

If you might be interested in conducting a summer program for K-8
teachers in your area during 2000 or 2001, please contact Joe Rosenstein
at joer@dimacs.rutgers.edu, within the next few weeks if possible.

Many topics in discrete mathematics are appropriate for children at
all grade levels, and can help transform mathematics instruction.
The DIMACS Leadership Program in Discrete Mathematics has developed a
set of materials which have been successful with teachers, and which
teachers have successfully implemented in their classrooms.

We are looking for discrete mathematicians who would be willing to lead
such institutes. We can provide you with all the materials that you
will need to lead this program at your site, including daily schedules
of activities, detailed instructor notes, transparencies, and hand-outs
for the daily workshops, and exercises and take-home materials for the
participants.

If you are interested, please send me a note, and I will address all
questions you may have about the program.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE GEORGE B. DANTZIG PRIZE 2000

Nominations are solicited for the George B. Dantzig Prize, administered
jointly by the Mathematical Programming Society (MPS) and the Society
for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). This prize is awarded to
one or more individuals for original research which by its originality,
breadth and depth, is having a major impact on the field of mathematical
programming. The contributions(s) for which the award is made must
be publicly available and may belong to any aspect of mathematical
programming in its broadest sense. Strong preference will be given
to candidates that have not reached their 50th birthday in the year of
the award.

The prize will be presented at the Mathematical Programming Society's
triennial symposium, to be held 7-11 August 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia,
USA.
Past prize recipients are listed on the MPS Web site

               http://www.caam.rice.edu/~mathprog/ .

The members of the prize committee are William H. Cunningham, Claude
Lemarechal, Stephen M. Robinson (Chair), and Laurence A. Wolsey.

Nominations should consist of a letter describing the nominee's
qualifications for the prize, and a current curriculum vitae of the
nominee including a list of publications. They should be sent to

        Stephen M. Robinson
        Department of Industrial Engineering
        University of Wisconsin-Madison
        1513 University Avenue
        Madison, WI 53706-1572, USA
        E-mail: smrobins@facstaff.wisc.edu

Nominations must be received by 15 October 1999. Any nominations
received
after that date will not be considered. Submission of nomination
materials in electronic form (e-mail with attachments as needed) is
strongly encouraged.
