From grosse@security.ece.orst.edu Wed Nov 17 11:05:07 1999 Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1999 10:36:03 -0800 From: Jason Grosse To: islmail@security.ece.orst.edu Subject: just a reminder: ISL shutdown [ The following text is in the "iso-8859-1" character set. ] [ Your display is set for the "US-ASCII" character set. ] [ Some characters may be displayed incorrectly. ] The ISL will be shutdown on November 21st @ 4:30pm for the rest of the evening. QUESTION: **WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN??** ANSWER: The ISL is in dire need of a firewall and personal application server. I will install a firewall such that all computers in the lab will be protected from potential outside attacks. A personal application server will house your applications in a special directory on Jacobi. This method will increase hard drive space on your machine and performance! QUESTION: Will I still be able to ftp / telnet / ssh / print to other computers?? ANSWER: If you are on a computer inside the firewall network, you will be able to do all these things. If you are on the outside trying to these things to a computer on the inside, it is not possible. QUESTION: Will the security.ece.orst.edu be outside the firewall ?? ANSWER: yes, and so will all the printers in the lab **NOTE** all other computers will be inside the firewall. THIS IS WHAT I NEED FROM EVERYONE IN THE LAB: 1) I need your list of personal programs that you would like to use on your machine. I need the list by Friday 5:00pm. Remember, if you do not send me a list you will not get any additional programs! 2) Everyone should log out of their machines on November 21st, prior to the shutdown. Backup your files onto Jacobi (server), I don't want you to lose any data! **POLICY REMINDER** Everyone needs to log out of their machines every evening before they go home. In addition, if you plan on being away from the lab for more than 2 hours at any given time you need to log out of your machine. By logging out, it increases integrity of your files and increases availability of computers for non-regular users. Thank you. Jason C.
